My Dear Friend Is Near His New Beginning, Once Again. Frank had a ‘fro that could rival mine back in our teenage years in Tallaboa-Encarnación. We used to joke about it - “y todo por un afro” - sharing that laugh until we both lost our hair years later. But that’s how I want to remember him first: young, with that magnificent hair, a real character in every sense of the word. As I close this day, I have learned that my childhood friend Frank is very close to beginning his journey to his new life. Some of you may not know him personally, but you may already know him without realizing it. Frank became one of my main characters in “Encuentro Cercano en Tallaboa” - both the first and second parts. His own direct influence and inspiration fed my imagination while I wasn’t even looking. Incredibly, I’m not even sure if he ever had the opportunity to read about himself in that fictional realm. I hope he did. Returning to the Hospital

Returning to the Hospital - Edil Rentas Casiano Yesterday your mom and I went to the hospital in Ocala where you spent so many weeks and months in the last two years of your life. We went to visit a friend who was hospitalized, after an emergency surgery. The visit brought many memories to mind from your times there. The drive to the hospital felt way too familiar, and brought tears to my eyes. The news that the friend possibly had kidney failure , felt like a punch on the gut. Walking in through the emergency room I could not help to think of you, and our many visits there. This visit revived many emotions covered over by the last year’s living. Having said that I cannot believe that it has been almost a year of your unexpected departure. I cannot help to re-live that day in my mind often. The call, the drive to your house, and Maureen’s look at me when I walked into the house. She sat on the living room floor as the paramedic sat on the table taking down information. Just ...

El Castillo de Mario Mercado

Continuando la historia de Don Manolo, el escobero que vive en el pueblito, hoy hace una semana que mientras entregaba periódicos me encontré con él. Luego de  platicar con él aquel día, mi amigo Hiram “Billy” Bracero, con quien hacía tiempo no compartía, y yo conversamos sobre Don Manolo y sus escobas. Para mi sorpresa, Billy me dijo que Don Andrés  \Albino, quien vive en la Tercera Calle por frente a el Chino y cerca de su casa, también hace escobas. Para mí fue una sorpresa, pues yo no lo sabía, aún después de tantos años pasando diariamente frente a la casa de Don Andrés. Pues le comentaba a Billy que Don Manolo estaba muy interesado en que le cuente sobre el viaje que hicimos hace varias semanas al El Castillo de Mario Mercado, el que está arriba en la montaña por detrás de la CORCO. Por cierto fue Billy quien en su viaje al futuro averiguo que el castillo también se conocía como el castillo de los perros, y me compartió varios datos de historia respecto al viejo castil...
